PRESIDENT CORY AQUINO

Former President Cory Aquino, the icon of democracy in Asia and the first female president of the Philippines died today after battling from colon cancer. She was 76.

I was just 12 years old in 1986 when Cory Aquino then the housewife and widow of the late Senator Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. was shot into prominence when she led a bloodless uprising that toppled the Marcos dictatorship and re-installed democracy in the Philippines. The bloodless people power revolt known as EDSA 1 then became an inspiration to other people around the world and we saw dictatorships and authoritarian regimes crumbled in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Under her administration, our present constitution has been drafted and subsequently ratified in 1987. Her regime has been rocked by 9 failed coup attempts, the bloodiest I think was the siege of the Makati Business District in 1989 led by now Gen. Danilo Lim. Although her regime was not perfect and was not immune to controversies, her best legacy to our nation is the restoration of our liberty and freedom. We should reciprocate this by keeping our vigilance on those vested interests who have sinister plans in tinkering the charter by way of CON-ASS to suit their political plans and not the interests of the Filipino people. To our beloved former President CORY AQUINO, may your soul rest in peace and your legacy be cherished by the succeeding generations.

The outpouring of grief continues to flow for the death of former President Cory Aquino. Her remains now lies for public viewing at LA SALLE Greenhills.

One trait that I admire most of former President Cory Aquino is her being not vindictive. Imagine? She didn't use the vast resources of the presidency to unravel the real mastermind of NINOY's murder.
