"2010 LEADING PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDERS: ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID"
Borrowing a famous punch line from former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s campaign slogan then,” IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID“. Well, it’s in the news recently that our 2010 leading presidential contenders have a common stand at least for now: FIX THE ECONOMY FIRST, largely due to the effects of the global financial crisis. Saka na daw ang hiwalayan, bangayan,at siraan pag kampanya na talaga. Senators Mar Roxas II, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda and Francis Escudero, on separate occasions, pointed out that there would be time enough for each of them to announce their plans for 2010. They said it would be unfair to begin politicking at the expense of lawmaking, especially during a time of economic crisis.
MAR ROXAS–He is proposing the grant of tax rebates to the people so that they can spend their earnings directly and spur domestic economic activities.”This is what the government should work on. This is what we should give priority to – how we can make our economy stay afloat,” Roxas said.
LOREN LEGARDA–She cautioned the government against “complacency and being lulled into inaction by overconfidence” in confronting the effects of the global economic turmoil. She said it was okay for the Philippines to be inspired by acclaims, including the “stable” rating given by Fitch Ratings, but it should not fall into a false sense of security.
PING LACSON-Lacson said each senator seeking to run for president would have his or her own strategy and that some actually believed the “early bird gets the worm. Lacson is pushing for the immediate passage of the proposed budget for 2009 that would also serve as economic stimulus. He proposed that bicameral conference committee meetings be held publicly so that the people could guard against insertions or allocation of funds to parochial or selfish concerns of some lawmakers.
CHIZ ESCUDERO–Escudero stressed it was too early to talk about 2010 and that the government must work doubly hard to improve the economy that had been largely dependent on remittances from OFWs.“What is important now is for the government to work hard to bring back investor confidence in the country by spending efficiently,” he said.
VERY WELL SAID, but it remains to be seen if these political statements by the 2010 leading presidentiables could really be converted into actions. Baka naman sloganeering lang to mga tol to earn POGI points? Anong sey nyo?

Mar Roxas has now an edge of winning especially on the decision of the Supreme Court that allows the parallel importation of drugs into the country. In which Mar Roxas principally sponsored the Cheaper Medicine Law.
It still remains to be seen if cheaper medicines could be translated into votes come election 2010
